Medicare and GLP-1 Weight-Loss Medications

What You Need to Know

Medicare coverage for GLP-1 medications is changing. Beginning July 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary program that gives certain people with Medicare prescription drug coverage access to GLP-1 medications for weight management. The program is currently scheduled to continue through December 31, 2027.

Who may qualify?

The program is available to certain people with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage who meet CMS clinical requirements. Eligibility considers factors such as your Body Mass Index (BMI), certain health conditions, and the reason the medication is being prescribed.

Because the requirements are specific, having Medicare Part D or being prescribed a GLP-1 medication does not automatically mean you qualify.

Medicare has created an online eligibility tool that walks you through a few questions to help determine whether the program may apply to you:

What will it cost?

If you qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, the current cost is $50 for a one month supply of an eligible medication. Because the Bridge operates separately from your regular Part D benefit, that $50 does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit.

Do I need prior authorization?

Yes. Your healthcare provider must prescribe an eligible medication and, when requested, complete a prior authorization confirming that you meet the program’s requirements. Your provider must also certify that the medication is being used as part of a lifestyle program that includes diet and exercise.

As with other prior authorizations, your healthcare provider is responsible for supplying the necessary clinical information. You should follow up with your provider and pharmacy if you experience delays.

What if my GLP-1 is being prescribed for another medical condition?

This is an important distinction. Some GLP-1 medications may already be covered under your regular Medicare Part D benefit when prescribed for certain medical conditions. In those situations, your prescription may be handled through your Part D plan rather than through the GLP-1 Bridge.

Your doctor, pharmacy, and Medicare drug plan can help determine which coverage rules apply to your prescription.

Where can I get the latest information?

The medications covered by the program and other requirements may change. Rather than relying on a list that could become outdated, check Medicare’s official GLP-1 information before filling your prescription:
