What to Do When a Medical Bill Appears Incorrect

Medical billing errors can happen. If you receive a bill that does not look right, take time to review it before paying.

Start by comparing the bill with your Medicare Summary Notice or Medicare Advantage Explanation of Benefits.

Check:

  • The provider’s name.
  • The date of service.
  • The services listed.
  • What the provider charged.
  • What Medicare or your health plan paid.
  • What your EOB or Medicare Summary Notice says you may owe.
  • What the provider is asking you to pay.

If the amounts do not match, contact the provider’s billing department and ask for an explanation. You may also want to request an itemized bill.

If necessary, contact your Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare to determine how the claim was processed.

Do not ignore a bill, but do not assume every bill is correct simply because you received it. A billing problem may result from an incorrectly processed claim, incorrect coding, missing insurance information, or another administrative issue.

Keep copies of your bills, EOBs or Medicare Summary Notices, and notes from conversations with the provider or health plan while the issue is being resolved.

If you received a medical bill that you believe is incorrect, contact Regional Financial Security Agency. We can help you understand your Medicare coverage, review the information with you, and determine what questions you should ask to get the issue resolved.
